About Slade Associates

Truro resident, Wilfred "Red" Slade began his land surveying career while still a teller at Seamen's Savings Bank in Provincetown in the mid 1930s. Between 1948 and 1962 he worked as chief of survey party for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts State Highway. Included in his assignments was the laying out of the base line for the new Route 6. In 1962 he went into private practice, opening a modest surveying firm in Wellfleet.

Between 1965 and 1969 he was joined in the summers by twin brothers, Dick and Chet Lay who had strong family ties to Wellfleet that went back many generations. Upon graduation from college in 1970, they both had decided that surveying was a pleasant way to make a living and so settled in Wellfleet with their new wives. With their love of the outdoors and for the Cape's natural beauty, it was a decision that time has only reinforced.

Upon retirement in 2017 Dick and Chet Lay turned over their vast archives of historic survey records and digital files to Donald T. Poole of Outermost Land Survey, Inc. The purchase of the business by Outermost Land Survey, Inc. was a suitable fit as Chet and Dick have a compatible approach and philosophy to surveying as Donald.

Slade Associates has evolved into a modern surveying firm with a fully networked computer system, Computer-Aided Drafting and Design (CADD)-which allows plans to be sent to clients electronically-and with total station theodolites with electronic distance measuring units and GPS Enabled, Real Time Kinematic (RTK) and Control Survey quality GPS units. Slade Associates covers all aspects of land surveying, including boundary surveys, surveys for the Land Court, condominium conversion plans, certified plot plans, subdivision plans, control surveys for photogrammetry, topographic surveys, leveling, land planning, flood plain certificates and archival research at the Barnstable County Registry of Deeds and Probate.

The current assessors' atlas for the Town of Wellfleet was prepared and is maintained by Slade Associates.

Donald T. Poole, PLS has been a Licensed Professional Land Surveyor since 1981 first in the states of Tennessee, Kentucky and West Virginia and now Massachusetts. In 1983, Mr. Poole returned to Cape Cod and started work at Nickerson and Berger, a long-established Cape Cod firm. Nickerson and Berger was purchased by Coastal Engineering Company, Inc. and Mr. Poole continued on as Director of Land Surveying for 18 years until founding Outermost Land Survey, Inc. in 2002.

Mr. Poole pursued certification as a Federal Land Surveyor (#1499) in order to understand the Public Land Survey System and broaden his knowledge concerning Indian Lands. More recently Mr. Poole completed training as a Mediator in conjunction with Cape Mediation. It is Mr. Poole's belief that in a dispute, neighbors can work out solutions that will be more satisfactory than a court ordered decision. Mr. Poole's land surveying experience covers many facets of land surveying, such as, Boundary Surveys and Land Court Plans, as well as expert witness testimony in boundary disputes, access rights, and land-use issues.

In 2014 Mr. Poole was chosen as Massachusetts Land Surveyor of the Year in recognition of his work in furthering the Land Surveying Profession. He serves on the Massachusetts Association of Land Surveyor and Civil Engineers Board of Directors (MALSCE), is the TrigStar Coordinator for Massachusetts, and is a past President of the Cape Cod Chapter of MALSCE.

Mr. Poole volunteers on various Town Committees and serves on the Board of Directors for the Brewster Chamber of Commerce.

Outside interests include the Catboat Association, Cape Cod Astronomical Society and the Brewster Sportsman Club. He is an avid sailor and can be found outdoors year-round.

We, Chet and Dick Lay have decided to finally retire and are creating this opportunity to introduce, PLS Donald T. Poole to our current and future clients. Don Poole will continue to provide quality land surveying services and will acquire our extensive records and history of the region.

Don Poole, of Outermost Land Survey, Inc. has extensive experience and familiarity servicing the Lower and Outer Cape region & beyond, and the Office Manager, Dawn Sternlieb, is able and happy to work with you to help you to understand the goals and scope of your projects. Dawn’s knowledge and expertise will be a valuable additional asset.
